Elena Fuentes-Afflick, MD, MPH, has been appointed as vice dean for academic affairs and faculty development, effective April 1. In his announcement, Dean Sam Hawgood stated that she will be responsible for overseeing all academic affairs in the School of Medicine, including the recruitment, development and advancement of “a diversified academic workforce of the highest caliber.” She will also be responsible for overseeing innovative programs for faculty orientation, career development, and leadership training.
Dr. Fuentes-Afflick has been a faculty member since 1993. She is a professor and vice chair of pediatrics, a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics, and the chief of pediatrics at San Francisco General Hospital. Throughout her career, she has focused on issues of acculturation, immigrant health, and health disparities.
Having earned her MD at the University of Michigan, Dr. Fuentes-Afflick came to UCSF for her residency training in pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in health policy and MPH in epidemiology from UC Berkeley. She has served in several important national leadership roles, including president of the Society for Pediatric Research and service on the Council of the National Institute for Child Health and Development. Dr. Fuentes-Afflick was chair of the UCSF Academic Senate from 2009-2011. She was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2010.
Dean Hawgood also thanked the search committee, chaired by Dr. Nancy Milliken, and expressed his gratitude to Dr. Neal Cohen, who has served as interim dean for academic affairs since May of 2011. Dr. Cohen will continue in his role as vice dean for affiliations and international relationships.
